Rev. Dr. James D. Key became the Pastor
of our historic church.
Founded in 1885 as Los Angeles’ first Black Baptist church, Second Baptist Church of Los Angeles (SBCLA) has been a vital part of the city’s spiritual, civic, and cultural life for more than 140 years. Its historic Griffith Avenue sanctuary, designed by renowned architect Paul R. Williams and opened in 1926, stands today as a celebrated Los Angeles cultural landmark.

Across generations, Second Baptist has remained a gathering place for faith, leadership, justice, and community, welcoming influential voices from the civil rights era through the present day. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made Second Baptist his West Coast church home, and throughout its history the church has welcomed distinguished faith, civic, cultural, and national leaders, including Howard Thurman, W.E.B. Du Bois, Rosa Parks, and Kamala Harris, among many others.
In January 2026, SBCLA entered its next chapter under the leadership of its ninth pastor, Reverend Dr. James D. Key.
The history is extraordinary. The mission continues. Join us each Sunday as we carry forward a legacy of faith, service, revival, and positive change.

Outreach:
Help Second Baptist Church continue its legacy of faith, service, and community outreach. Food distribution is offered every second and fourth Saturday at 9:00 AM in the church parking lot at 25th Street and Griffith Avenue. Volunteers are especially needed as early as 6:30AM to pack the food boxes.
